Chapter 31

Loshak, Spinks, and Trufant sat around Pressler’s desk at the Prairie Village station, not talking. The reporter’s eyes were huge. He hadn’t said anything the whole drive back.

A grin still curled on Trufant’s lip, and the small man snorted every now and then. He’d given Loshak the play-by-play on stabbing himself as they drove back to the station. He would probably need medical attention — at the very least a tetanus shot — but for now he seemed thrilled with all the white towels he was staining red.

Loshak massaged his own throbbing wrist. He’d taken a handful of aspirin for it as soon as they got back, but it wasn’t helping yet.

The door to Booking opened. In unison, the three of them turned toward it.

Pressler crossed the desk pool and sat gingerly behind his own. He had a wad of gauze shoved up each nostril, and the delicate skin under his eyes was already starting to swell. Beyond that, he looked nauseous. A far cry from the triumphant cowboy hog-tying the Strongman bouncer. Now that the guy was in a cell, Loshak supposed, the comedown was getting to the detective.

Trufant giggled.

“Will you shut up?” Pressler snapped. He chewed his lip a moment before he turned to address Loshak and Spinks. “We screwed the pooch on that one, boys. Just unzipped and bared our asses.”

“They don’t know why we were there,” Spinks said. “I didn’t tell them anything.”

“But they know we were there for something.” Loshak wrapped his hand around his wrist and squeezed. Sometimes pressure helped. “If there’s anything at all going on there, no matter how small, it’ll be cleaned out by the time we can get back in.”

“What if we got a warrant?” Spinks asked.

“For what?” Pressler shook his head. “We got fuck-all to go on.”

Spinks took a breath like he wanted to say something, then stopped.

“What?” Loshak asked.

“I— I saw something.” He took another breath, then let it out. “But it might not be anything. It was like… Well, you know I saw the old guy in the bondage gear.”

“That’s legal in Kansas,” Pressler said. “Consenting adults.”

“But… but it might not have been.” Spinks swallowed hard, then glanced from the portly detective to Loshak. “You heard that when I held the mic up to the door, right? You could hear the crying?”

Loshak shook his head.

“We didn’t get any crying.”

“It was…” Spinks said, his eyes going wide again. “I mean, it sounded like a kid. Sounded young. In the moment, I was sure it was. A minor, I mean. I was certain. But thinking back, I guess it’s harder to say. I think… I thought they were, like, hurting him or her, whoever it was. It sounded bad.”

“Did you see anything?” Loshak asked, leaning toward the reporter.

Spinks scowled and looked away.

“I kind of threw open the door and busted in on a guy. But like, immediately, the sound cut off. And there was just me and him staring at each other over this computer station. It was
